Is it considered an occupational illness if an employee becomes ill at his/her workplace and is tested positive for the coronavirus infection?
Only those cases can be considered occupational illnesses where the origin of the sickness is proven to be the workplace. Occupational illness is an acute or chronic health-related impairment that occurred while working, or after working or work-related activities. It can be traced back to such physical, chemical, biological, psychosocial and ergonomic factors that existed during the work or work processes, or that are the result of higher or lower exposure of the employee than optimal.
The condition of defining an occupational illness is that a doctor reports the infection as a suspicious occupational illness, it is investigated by the health and safety authority and registered by the labor-hygienic and occupational healthcare authority as an occupational illness. The social security authority will make the final decision regarding the allowance.
